Ovi is Nokia’s very own online app and media portal where users can literally shop for applications and services that they desire.

The announcement that was made in the Mobile World Congress stirred a lot of interest. According to reports, N97 wil be the first phone to be integrated with Ovi store. This means that the unit will be able to access the store at a great ease and almost immediately. Users of S40 and S60 on the other hand will have to wait until May if they wish to shop at the Ovi store.

Nokia also boasted that Ovi store isn’t just an ordinary online store. It will be able to predict or sort of guess your app choices and therefore make shopping easier. The company says it’ll learn your tastes over time and anticipate what you want, as well as make recommendations based on your geographical location

The news that will perhaps boost the morale of open source lovers is not a rumor but an official announcement made by the company.

Vice President at Nokia’s markets unit Ukko Lappalainen said the following to Reuters reporter: In the longer perspective, Linux will become a serious alternative for our high-end phones.

Prior to this, Google released its Linux-based Android phone. The G-Phone is a proof that big names and companies are realizing the potential of open source as a viable platform for development.

Nokia uses Linux maemo software in its niche offering of Internet tablets, while it uses Symbian software for its phones.

“I don’t see anything in Android which would make it better than Linux maemo,” Lappalainen also added that he doesn’t see anything in Android which would make it better than Linux maemo.”

According to Reuters, Nokia will unveil the said smartphone on a special London tech event this coming October 2. The smartphone has a codename Tube. And it will be the first smartphone from the company that controls a large percentage of the mobile phone market.

The Finland based company’s upcoming phone will be competing against Apple iPhone and the high-end phone models from Samsung and HTC.

The Tube phone was first announced in August, only today the details of the phone’s features were leaked to the public. The phone has touch-screen capabilities similar to that of iPhone. Sources also said that the phone will feature Wi-Fi connection and Java applet support. It will also have a DVB-H mobile TV broadcast.

Like Nokia other high-end units, this phone will have a remarkable music service. According to sources this is Nokia answer to the popularity of Apple’s iTunes.
