New Notebook Graphics Chipset and Drivers from Nvidia

Last week Nvidia introduced a new graphics chipset for notebooks, the GeForce 9400M “Ion”. At the same time, the company also launched the beta version of updated drivers for Microsoft’s Windows XP and Vista notebook computers that are outfitted with its graphics processor.

Nvidia’s “Ion” chipset is aimed at replacing the Intel graphics silicon that is currently being used in Intel’s Atom processor. The GeForce 9400M was designed to give better performance compared to the Intel graphics silicon which can give Nvidia leverage among notebook manufacturers. Speaking of performance, the updated notebook PC drivers from Nvidia are also designed to support GPU-accelerated game physics and video conversion.

Owners of notebooks that are using GeForce 8- and 9-series GPUs or Quuadro NVS-equipped chipset can now download from Nvidia’s web site, which also list the notebook pCs that are not yet supported by the new drivers, the beta version of the new 32- and 64-bit drivers. A WHQL-certified version of the drivers for all GeForce 7, 8, and 9 series and Quadro NVS series notebook GPUs can be downloaded early next year.
