New LED Driver for Mobile Phones

Leadis Technology, Inc., an analog and mixed-signal semiconductor developer of color display drivers, had recently launched a new LED Driver with “In-Situ” Temperature Compensation Engine for mobile phones. The new LED driver, LDS8160, features Leadis Technology’s proprietary LED-Sense™ Temperature Compensation engine and PowerLite™ Current Regulator which still has a pending patent. The LDS8160 also has a low-power standby mode feature.

Mobile phones before was mainly used for voice communication. With the technology that we have now, it had evolved into a multi-media device. Users can almost do anything with their mobile phones, from voice communication to browsing the internet and even sharing videos and photos. All these activities are made possible with the mobile phone’s display. The challenge before was the backlight unit to satisfactorily display contrast and color saturation when the phones or the display are used indoor and outdoors. The LDS8160 was designed to solve this by making sure that the white color coordinates of diodes in the display is constant through the use of temperature compensation.

The LDS8160 LED driver is a 6-channel white LED driver or shortly put it is a dual-output RGB LED, with three integrated temperature compensation circuits for each bank of two LED drivers. Both WLED and RGB LED backlighting is supported as well as keypad and other lighting functions in portable applications.
